Defense, Rebounding and Physicality propel Washington to Game 3 Win

Roughly 30-35 minutes before the game, the Washington Mystics shared that both Elena Delle Donne and Ariel Atkins were available to play in Game three after being ruled questionable with back injuries. They both started in Washington's 94-81 win over the Connecticut Sun. Each gave what they could and it was appreciated by their teammates who planned to play this pivotal Game 3 without them. Delle Donne had 13 points and six rebounds, but it was Emma Meesseman that led Washing

Delle Donne, Atkins lead Washington past Connecticut in Game 1

Elena Delle Donne led Washington with a 22-point, 10 rebound, five assist effort. Ariel Atkins had a big game as well with 21 points, five rebounds and three steals. The Mystics saw five of their players score in double-figures on the night. Courtney Williams led the way for the Sun with 26 points, knocking down six of her nine three point attempts. Alyssa Thomas did everything she possibly could on her way to a 20-point night. Four of their five starters scored in double fig

MYSTICS OPEN THEIR NEW HOME WITH A WIN OVER THE DREAM

The Washington Mystics opened their new arena with a renewed commitment to the defensive end, they used that edge to protect their new home. Washington beat Atlanta 96-75 in the Entertainment and Sports Arena last night. Ariel Atkins (Pictured Above) led all scorers with 21 points, Elena Delle Donne had 18 points, including the very first basket scored in the new facility. Emma Meesseman had 14 points and Kristi Toliver and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough had 10 points a piece. Th

Stewart, Howard combine for 59 points as Seattle wins third title

In front of a crowd of nine thousand plus at George Mason University's Eagle Bank Arena, the Washington Mystics saw their season come to a close last night at the hands of the Seattle Storm. The visiting Storm completed the three game sweep with a 98-82 win, led by Breanna Stewart and Natasha Howard. These two teams were both talented in their own right, but one of the clearest things that separated them as the series played out was the business like approach by Seattle. They

Delle Donne returns, balanced attack helps Washington force Game 5

The Washington Mystics haven't been their best selves during this series with the Atlanta Dream. Losing Elena Delle Donne due to an injury certainly didn't help, but they found their stride as she returned for a Game 4 win. ''No one had to be Superwoman, but we just needed to get a little bit smarter and get back to getting stops" said the 2015 Regular Season Most Valuable Player. Her return to the lineup allowed the Mystics to regain their rhythm on both ends of the floor. I

MYSTICS ADVANCE TO SEMIFINALS WITH ROUT OF THE SPARKS

Mystics all star forward Elena Delle Donne drives on Sparks all star Candace Parker Defense. That’s the big takeaway from Washington’s rout of the Los Angles Sparks in last night’s elimination game in Washington, D.C. With renovations being done at Capital One arena and the Mystics new facility not yet open, they hosted the Sparks at the Smith Center on the Campus of George Washington University. The way the building is set up (sits 5,000), Washington fed off the energy of 3,

Mystics make it six in a row, Atkins has 26 in win over Dallas

The Washington Mystics and Dallas Wings were on two different types of streaks coming into today's game. Washington had five game win streak while Dallas was on a seven game slide. Both of those streaks continued by the end of this one, Washington is now 20-11 on the year after a 93-80 win this afternoon. The Mystics were led by rookie Ariel Atkins (Pictured Above) with a game-high 26 points, 23 from Elena Delle Donne and Kristi Toliver's 17. The Wings were led by Skylar Digg

Atkins, Delle Donne combine to score 50 as Mystics run past the Sky

Washington's Head Coach Mike Thibault was honored during a pregame tribute to celebrate his 300th win a few games ago. Chicago was in town looking to avenge their last outing here in D.C. when they were throttled by the Mystics. This game started a little slow, but the Mystics took control of it by closing the second quarter with a big run. It may have been the best game of the season for Ariel Atkins; she finished with 25 points, seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and

Big fourth quarter leads Mystics past Liberty

The last time these two teams met, it took a buzzer beater from Elena Delle Donne to decide it. That wouldn't be the case this time as Washington used a big fourth quarter, including a 15-5 run to beat New York 86-67. Delle Donne started slow, but she scored 11 points in the final period as the Mystics outscored the Liberty 22-8. Tina Charles led all scorers with 26 points and 12 rebounds, allowing her to move into 16th place on the New York Liberty Scoring List. She passed f

Delle Donne delivers at the buzzer, Mystics edge Liberty

The Washington Mystics were able to keep their win streak going Thursday night thanks to a clutch shot by Elena Delle Donne(22 points). The Mystics didn't play one of their best games and the New York Liberty had a lot to do with that. They switched everything on defense, the Liberty personnel did a great job of shrinking the floor. Holding Washington to just 38.2 % shooting from the floor and 25.9% from beyond the arc. New York shot 50% from the floor, as well as 24 assists

Defense the difference in the second half, Mystics top Sun to take lead in East

It was a big night, the top of the Eastern Conference was up for grabs as both the Washington Mystics and Connecticut Sun came into last night's game with 8-5 records. Washington would take advantage of the opportunity, starting this week's three game homestand with a 92-80 win. After a slow start, the Mystics used their defense to fuel a third quarter run that allowed them to take control of the game. Connecticut fought back, closing the gap to six before Washington shut the

Defense fuels Washington's win over Chicago

The Washington Mystics began played the first part of a home and home with the Chicago Sky this evening. Defense has been an issue for the Mystics all season long, when they're competing at a high level on that end, they're one of the better teams in the league. In their losses, it's because there's inconsistent or flat out poor effort and execution on that end of the floor. That wouldn't be a problem tonight though, Washington put together their most complete game from a def

Hawkins, Atkins combine for 32 as Mystics rally to beat Aces

For the second consecutive game, the Washington Mystics got a win. They start the season 2-0 after a 75-70 come from behind victory over the shorthanded Las Vegas Aces. An abysmal offensive performance in the first half put Washington in a hole, turning the ball over at a high rate didn't help things either. A strong performance from the Washington bench helped turned things around, allowing them to withstand a balanced Aces attack. A'ja Wilson had 16 points and eight reboun

Second unit steps up, Toliver delivers late as Mystics win opener

Mystics rookie Myisha Hines Allen looks to finish strong on the Indiana Fever It as far from a pretty win, but the Washington Mystics were able to open their season with a 82-75 win over the Indiana Fever. The Mystics defense got them through a tough offensive performance, Delle Donne and Toliver knocked down a couple of big shots late.
