NC State's BJ Anya Game Winner

After an underwhelming freshman season where he didn't quite live up to the immense promise that he showed while being a top prospect at DeMatha Catholic High School, BJ Anya came into last summer driven to prove that he indeed is a difference maker. After he reportedly weighed as much as 349 pounds as a freshman, Anya had minimum impact to say the least after averaging 2.1 points,2.1 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game. His weight issues affected his conditioning which limited how much he could stay on the court and impact a game. However after a summer of three a day workouts focusing on cardio with NC State strength and conditioning coach Bob Alejo and major changes to his diet, Anya came into the season at 290, almost 60 pounds lighter then where he was at the end of last season. The results of his dedication have been immediate. His averages are up across the board (4.6 points 60%FG, 4.4 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game) and his impact is now being felt, especially on defense. Everything came together in a NCAA first round match-up against LSU. In the last seconds, NC State Head Coach Mark Gottfried called for junior guard Trevor Lacey to take the shot. As Lacey made his move, LSU defenders swarmed him forcing him to dish the ball to Anya ( 4 points and 7 rebounds) who then took a dribble and shot a jump hook...ball game. Anya's game winner capped a comeback from 16 points down to win and advance. A year ago, Anya wouldn't have been on the floor late in the game, now, he's a hero after hitting the game winner. A fitting end for the hard work he put in last summer. Those three a days don't seem so bad after all. Watch how it all unfolded below.
