Remember Them Days - VCU's Eric Maynor Clutch Jumper Takes Out Duke In the 2007 NCAA Tournament

By Cardell Dudley

Today, thanks to the great job done by the energetic Shaka Smart, VCU Men's Basketball is a top tier program. A program that is expected to not only make the NCAA Tournament year in and year out, they are also expected to make deep runs in the tournament year in and year out as well. However, VCU's rise began in 2005 under the eye of then head coach Anthony Grant and a fearless guard named Eric Maynor. Maynor fresh off an amazing finish in the CAA Championship where he scored nine of his 20 points in the final 2 minutes to defeat George Mason 65-59, led the 11th seeded Rams against the powerhouse 6th seed Duke Blue Devils in the first round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament. Many expected that this game would be the final to a wonderful 27 win campaign for the Rams, how wrong they were. In a back an forth affair throughout, Maynor would once again rise to occasion. With 1.8 seconds left in the game, Maynor would nail a 15 footer to knock off Duke and make the basketball world take notice that VCU is indeed here. Maynor finished the game with 22 points and 8 assist. Take a look at the footage of Maynors exploits below.
