George Washington men’s basketball opened their season with a strong second half to defeat Maine 67-47. The Revolutionaries were led by 6’10”, 255-pound senior forward-center Luke Hunger, a Northwestern transfer who came off the bench to post a game-leading and career high-tying 15 points in just over 24 minutes. Hunger filled in admirably for All-A-10 center Rafael Castro, who was limited due to foul trouble. Preseason All-Conference guard Christian Jones added 14 points, four rebounds, and two steals on 6-of-12 shooting from the field, while Western Kentucky transfer Tyrone Marshall Jr. contributed a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds on 5-of-10 shooting.
Maine put up a tough fight early, holding GW to just 37 percent shooting and 0-for-7 from beyond the arc in the first half. Despite the cold shooting, GW took a narrow 29-25 lead into halftime. The Black Bears opened the second half strong, using a 10-6 run to tie the game at 35 just past the 16-minute mark. However, a clutch three-pointer from Tre Dinkins ignited a 15-4 Revolutionaries run that pushed the lead back to double digits. From there, GW controlled the pace and energy, outscoring Maine 38-22 in the second half to seal the win.
For Maine, TJ Biel led the way with 13 points and seven rebounds, both team highs. Ace Flagg — the brother of Dallas Mavericks rookie and top overall NBA Draft pick Cooper Flagg — chipped in 10 points, four steals, and three rebounds on 4-of-8 shooting.
With the win, George Washington starts the season 1-0 and will travel north to face 1-0 South Florida in The Hall of Fame Tip-Off at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, and the game will be streamed live on Peacock.
